2010 FIDM Movie Costume Exhibit Review
This year at the FIDM Museum "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design"
features costumes from twenty movies. These are represented by over a hundred and
twenty wonderful
costumes. Four of the 5
nominees for the Oscar for Best Costume are represented: Bright Star,
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Nine, and The Young Victoria plus
numerous
nominees from the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
Costumes are divided into 3 main area. Historical costumes are in
the front. Last year's Oscar winner starts the show. There are 3
costumes from The Duchess. These are different than were on display
last year, day dress vs. evening gowns. Two of the best eye candy
set-ups and double award nominees are right around the corner from each
other with a half dozen of each. Nine is the sharp glitter of
rhinestones, a selection of the one million used in the costume creation.
A Young Victoria is an elegant shimmer of silk, satin and lace.
The center selection showcases a wide variety of current and vintage
movie costumes. Each movie has it's own flare, painting it's time
period, sometimes with flash, and sometimes noticeable in it's plainness of
"normal" clothing that still defines the characters. The back section
has one of the largest selection of fantasy and sci-fi costumes that have
been featured in quite a while. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
shares the room with Star Trek, Watchman, GI Joe, Where the Wild Things Are
and more.
Presentation is different this year in that most of the costumes have
their own little shadow box framed with film clip graphics. This
means that the costumes are mainly visible from the front.. and they're set
further back. (Going to assume that we lost the
privilege of seeing them sooooooooo up-close because a few folk
just couldn't resist, figured they were privileged. Please, please,
don't be so selfish and greedy next time. Mind your matters and keep your
hands in your pockets - lecture over.) Still, the costumes are
close enough to make out wonderful details of embroidery, painting, beading,
etc. The details you can see are inspiring.
