Fabric Swatches - Elven VelvetOne of our members who lives in New Zealand has made a wonderful discovery. She has found the supplier of velvet to the LOTR movies. By contract he is not allowed to reveal the exact fabrics... but we're all thinking about what we could do with a swatch card. We could certainly figure out which colors are which. We've had no luck arranging purchase of fabric swatch cards with either NZ or the original manufacture... If anyone does have luck, please share it with the rest of us. To whet your appetite... here's a bit of a description. We're working on swatch charts first. About the fabricThe main velvet fabric used for many of the costumes was provided by a certain New Zealand fabric agent. It is manufactured by Denholme Velvet. The Denholme company velvets were both rich and light, silk-based, with wonderful colors (20+ color range including rose, two shades of grey, and interesting dun shades), available both smooth and crushed. They were of very high quality. Denholme Velvet also does crushed stretch velvet (they call it "velour") that was far and away superior to any other panne velvet I saw in my fabric shopping. This came in a range of blues from pale to dark, an acid green, gold, silver, pink (not the "rose dress" pink), a print or two, and two tie-dye variants, one blue-based and one in shades of red and orange. The texture of this fabric is light and fine. I do not think the stretch velvet was used in the movie; I mention it because it's a costumer favorite.
