Pre-registration required for classes.  Fit, Fix and Finish just drop on by. You may register by mail, phone (have credit card ready) or in person at AlterYears.   You may pay by cash, check or credit card.

History of Dyeing

Settle ‘period’ color questions once & for all: find out what kinds of dyes were used throughout history. Bring pen, pad & questions. Class limit 12. Fee: $10. Fee includes dye timeline handout.

Boned Irish Dress

Teacher fits each student to create a personal mock-up for a properly fitted dress to shape & support your figure; discussion on closures, fabric & boning choices. Bring: Lunch, basic sewing kit. Limit: 6.  Class fee: $60.  Fee includes pattern and 1 yard coutil.

Elizabethan Corset Construction

How to fit & construct the tabbed Elizabethan corset. Personal fitting for each student. Bring basic sewing kit & lunch. Limit 6. Fee: $50. Pattern & 1 yd coutil included in fee.

Next Class: Saturday, January 27: 10 am-4:30pm

Intermediate and Advance Renfaire Costuming

German, Irish, Italian: Researching your character & costume. Period-appropriate fabrics, colors & trims. Correct silhouettes & all the underpinnings that achieve them. Class limit: 12.  Fee: $7.

Fit, fix & Finish Nights 

Every 4th Thursday of the month: ‘Study Hall’ for Costumers! No registration, just bring that UFO (UnFinished Object) to fix, finish or fit in good company! Bring friends! Refreshments. Store open for purchases. No student discount.  Referees: AlterYears Staff.

Basic Sewing Kit

2 scissors: cloth & paper, pins (best: long quilt pins), lg safety pins, soft pencil, tape measure, 12-18” ruler (pref. clear), needles, white & black thread, thimble, notepad, pen ~ OPTIONAL: French curve, highligher or marker, hem ruler (to add seam allowances)

Draping the Bustle Skirt

Teachers will show how to drape a bustle underskirt and a variety of bustle overdrapes.  Includes construction tips.  Class limit: 12.  Class fee includes handouts.

The Art of Hoop Management Workshop

Movement workshop: learn to store,, stand, walk, sit, curtsey, bow and even drive a stick-shift in your hoop skirt.  Bring your own hoop or use our loaners.

Grommet Setting Workshop

Do's and don'ts of setting the 2-part grommet used in corsets and bodices.  Bring fabric or garment to practice on.  Size 0 grommet kit and practice grommets included in the class fee.

Custom Elizabethan Bodice Workshop

Custom-fit and mock-up construction of a properly fitted bodice for each attendee.  Includes a discussion on boning, interfacing and closures. Bring lunch and basic sewing kit. Class fee includes pattern and one yard coutil.

Our Teaching Staff:

Janet Wilson Anderson: A founder of the Costumer's Guild West, co-founder of the International Costumer's Guild, founding Dean of Costume College, Janet often lectures on costuming topics at colleges, universities, conferences, workshops, and private classes. She is the owner of AlterYears.

Elizabeth Martin Gerds: Experience in SF cons, SCA, RenFaire, Master Costumer: Civic Light Opera South Bay, CGW past pres, now an independent teacher & pattern maker.  

Kim Hallinger: Besides sewing some AlterYears corsets, she makes her own costumes & advises on correct period textiles for  for Victorian, Regency & Revolutionary events.

Bjo Trimble: Fiber artist & dye expert; originated Futuristic Fashion Shows & co-founded the con masquerade Division system. Main interests: nature dyeing & creating crazy-quilted wearable art.
